Cincinnati, a Smartest City

Cincinnati Named One of America's Smartest Cities                                

Movoto, an internet company providing a wide array of information and research services, designated Cincinnati to its list of "10 Smartest Cities in America."  They analyzed data from the 100 most populous cities in the country and ranked them on the following criteria:

  • Universities and colleges per person - The focus on education and exploration acts as an incubator of knowledge for the area.
  • Libraries per person - By giving residents an opportunity to borrow free media, all people have access to knowledge. Cincinnati came in second in this category.
  • Education level - They believe that a higher percentage of residents with an advanced degree demonstrated a higher willingness to learn.
  • Media per person (newspapers, TV, radio, magazines) - People are able to continually educate themselves.
  • Museums per person - Museums are academic institutions that educate the public.
  • Public School Rank - Cities with strong school systems better prepare children for the future.

Homearama returns to Cincinnati

Urbanspoon's Outstanding Restaurants in Cincinnati

Local Restaurants Take Honors                                            

Urbanspoon released its list of top restaurants in Cincinnati.   The crowdsourcing restaurant review site regularly produces a list of 200 nationally popular restaurants.  Included this year are Terry's Turf Club, Nada, Adriatico's Pizza, A.Tavola, Bakersfield, Senate, and Taste of Belgium.

Travel and Leisure Magazine also listed Jeff Ruby's Precinct restaurant among the "Best Steakhouses in the U.S."  They were lauded for their location in a former police patrol house and for their popularity with local sports stars and visiting celebrities. 

Innovation Improves Cincinnati

Cincinnati Named Top "Unexpected Place for Innovation"

Cincinnati was listed in the "Ten Most Unexpected Cities for High-Tech Innovation" list by  Dan Blacharski, editor-in-chief, called the city "the perfect destination with low cost of living, excellent infrastructure and an abundance of talent."  They also indicated that they would expect the high-technology sector to grow because the city employers including P&G, Kroger, Macy's and others encourage innovators to take advantage of the city's resources and culture.

Other cities named to the list were: Chattanooga, Detroit, Des Moines, Las Vegas, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Portland, Rochester and South Bend.

Cincinnati Named to Top of "15 U.S. Cities' Emerging Downtowns"

Cincinnati's Emerging Downtown Drives Population Growth            

Forbes has placed Cincinnati on its list of "15 U.S. Cities' Emerging Downtowns."  According to their research, America's major metropolitan downtowns have welcomed double-digit population growth in the past decade.  Particularly attracted to these areas are college-educated young adults, ages 25-34, who desire urban lifestyles.  

Cincinnati officials point to an estimated $1.3 billion invested in projects currently under construction or in the planning stages, including the streetcar line, Washington Park, the Banks, and Horseshoe Casino. Downtown Cincinnati, Inc. reports that the population grew 12% in 2011.  Increasing numbers of apartments and condos continue to come available.

P&G - One of World's Most Admired Companies

Fortune Magazine Places P&G on its World's Most Admired Companies List   

Fortune Magazine has compiled its list of the 2013 World's Most Admired Companies.  Proctor and Gamble has been ranked number 2 in the soap and cosmetics category and number 15 overall among the 50 companies on the list.  The highest ranked companies on the list, in order, are:  Apple, Google,, Coca-cola, and Starbucks.  

The attributes that Fortune used in compiling its rankings include:

  • ability to attract and retain talent
  •  quality of management
  •  social responsibility to the community and environment
  •  innovation, quality of products or services
  •  wise use of corporate assets
  •  financial soundness
  • long term investment value
  • effectiveness at doing business globally. 

Cincinnati Ranked # 4 in Best Cities for Working Moms

Cincinnati Ranked #4 in Best Cities for Working Moms
Working womenForbes has done a recent study to find good places for mothers with careers.  The study looked at women's earnings, safety, school districts, average commute, child-care costs and other factors when determining the cities they felt were best for working moms.
Amazingly, three Ohio cities were in the top seven listed. Columbus came in first with a women's average earning at $32,086.  Cincinnati was listed as fourth with average earnings of $30,769, and Cleveland was number seven with earnings of $29,601.
One of the surprising results that we did not know is there are 290.4 physicians per 100,000 residents.  It pays to have a medical school in the area!


KPMG Names Cincinnati to "Most Tax-Friendly Cities" List

Cincinnati Named Most Tax-Friendly Large City for Businesses in US

KPMG International has awarded Cincinnati the title of "most tax-friendly, large city for businesses in the U.S."

KPMG ranked 55 large international cities in its study.  Of all cities, Cincinnati came in #16.  We came in with a total tax index of 80.8.  That is 19.2 % below the U.S. baseline of 100.
Chennai, India was the top city overall with at tax index of 46.4.  In the U.S., Baltimore, 83.2, and Cleveland, 85.2, were the next highest cities in rankings.  Out of 14 countries in the study, the U.S. ranked eighth in terms of favorability of its overall tax structure for business.
Research and development, manufacturing and corporate services were all areas where Cincinnati ranked high.

Forbes declares that we are known for more than just food...they ranked us #8 on their Best U.S. Cities for Bargain Shopping List.  So, break out your credit cards and SHOP!
This ranking was augmented by the addition of over 100 new discount stores at Cincinnati Premium Outlets.  They offer tours of that facility to groups of 15 or more in multiple languages.
The rankings were based upon financial, geographical and retail data including sales taxes, consumer price index, number of outlet and Walmart stores, gross leasable retail area and total number of retail locations. We were the lowest of all on the CPI (Consumer Price Index).
