Glenwood Garden's Highfield Discovery Garden

One of the participating parks in Hamilton County's Explore the Outdoors Ohio Program is Glenwood Garden in Woodlawn, between Wyoming and Glendale.  If you like jogging, walking trails, wetlands, meadows and prairie land, it's a wonderful place to visit.

But, if you have children, it's a must see!  In the Highfield Discovery Garden, naturalists have weekly themes exploring ideas like flower power, all about bees, pond life, planting time and buggy things.  Kids will love the Discovery Tree, kid-sized tools in the Toolshed, Frog and Toad's Pond, Trolley Garden, and Butterfly Garden.

The Garden is open daily except Monday.  There is an admission charge, but your kids may love it so much that a season pass is the best idea.  For more information, check out their website at

Explore the Outdoors

Did You Know?

  • Fish don't have ears
  • Some snails have more than 25,000 teeth (evidenced by holes in my hostas)
  • Silk spun in a spider's web is stronger than steel
  • Owls are the only birds that can see the color blue

The State of Ohio has teamed with local park districts - Anderson Township Park District, City of Middletown, Clermont County Park District, and Hamilton County Parks - to encourage spending time outside with your family.  The initiative is based in part on the book No Child Left Inside by Richard Louv.

Studies show that children who are in touch with their natural environments have greater physical health, better self image, better social skills, increased creativity and improved concentration.  Ideas you might want to try include setting up a nature club, making your vacation outdoor oriented, or participating in activities like canoeing, birdwatching, gardening or fossil hunting.

A booklet describing activites is available at participating locations or by visiting the website at
