150th Anniversary of the Black Brigade - September 9

by The Cincinnati Team

On Sunday, September 9th at 5:30pm in Smale Riverfront Park, the Cincinnati Pops will present a free concert and the Black Brigade story will be honored.  Civil War era experiences and actors will be featured.

Feel free to bring blankets and a picnic or enjoy the concessions set up around the Schmidlapp Event Lawn.  Let your children play in the interactive fountains while summer is still here.  The Freedom Center will have discounted tickets that day and special artifacts from the time period.

The Story of the Black Brigade

In September of 1862, 700 African-American men volunteered to build fortifications to defend Cincinnati from Confederate attack during the Civil War.  There's lots more to the story, so walk along the riverfront and read about what was done to them and how they gloriously responded.  It's a special moment in Cincinnati's history, one you won't forget.

Smale Riverfront Park Opens Phase I

by The Cincinnati Team

Grand Opening of Smale Riverfront Park - May 18

Come celebrate the grand opening of Phase 1 of the Smale Riverfront Park. This phase of the project offers a dynamic recreational, entertainment and leisure resource for the citizens of Greater Cincinnati and visitors to this region.

Schmidlapp Stage provides a center for celebrations and musical events.  There is a Bike Center where bikes can be stored and repaired.  This is hoped to function as a location for alternative transportation to work for many commuters.  The Visitors Center will also be housed there.  One of the most visible features will be the Walnut Street Fountain and grand steps.   Water cascades down over waterfalls and water curtains and at night it is illuminated with thousands of lights and colors.

The community-wide celebration to be held May 18th will start with the Dedication Ceremony at 6:15 pm, followed by a free concert featuring:

  • Called to Worship (Urban Contemporary)
  • Tropicoso(Salsa/Latin)
  • Kathy Wade (Jazz)
  • Swampthang(Roots Rock)
  • P. Ann & the All Star(Motown/R&B/Line Dancing)

At 9pm, after the concert, the crowd will watch the famous Rozzi fireworks over the Ohio River. Attendees can bring a picnic dinner or purchase food at the Moerlein Lager House.  Special children's activities will include face painting, jugglers, balloon making and free ice cream.
