Wicked, In Cincinnati Through November 26th

Enjoy Wicked's third visit to Cincinnati, playing to sold-out audiences nightly. The show has worked its magic on both critics and audiences, on Broadway and around the world.  It has received major awards including a Grammy and three Tony Awards.  The New York Times calls it the "defining musical of the decade."

Your visit to the Emerald City will detail the untold stories of the two witches you remember from the famous Wizard of Oz stories.  You'll learn how they grow from girls together into the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

The show is playing at the Aronoff Theatre nightly through Nov.26th.

Be prepared, goblins and ghoulies for a great day of Dog Tricks and Treats.  Wags Park in Newtown is the place to be on Saturday, October 29th from 2-6 pm.  They are sponsoring a Halloween Dog Costume Party!

Whether dressed as the Easter Bunny, a pirate, Santa Claus or a look-alike to his master your dog...and you...are in for a good time.  Prizes will be awarded for the funniest, scariest and best overall costumes.  All participants are asked to dress responsibly. No styroform will be permitted.

The event will cost $10 per person, with kids under 16 getting in free.  There is a cash bar for beer and wine. Pizza will be served by the slice.  The music is being provided by Perfect Sequel, an acoustic duo. 

The group is also sponsoring a silent auction that includes Cesar Millan tickets, when he comes to the Taft Theater.

Proceeds will benefit UCAN, the United Coalition for Animals, a low-cost, spay / neuter clinic in Cincinnati.  It is located in the downtown area.

Remember, Wags Park requires proof of Rabies, Bordetella and DHPP Vaccinations, so get proof from your veterinarian and bring it with you to the event.

5th Books by the Banks Festival -   October 22                                                                    

With nearly 100 authors participating in the 5th annual Books by the Banks book festival on Saturday, October 22nd, it may be difficult to pick a favorite but here are some you won't want to miss. They include Dennis Lehane, Judy Collins, Chris Bohjalian, Paula McLain, Matthew Reinhart, and Alyssa Satin Capucilli.

There's something for all ages. Meet authors of fiction, history, sports, travel, cookbooks, children's and teen literature, plus more. Costumed storybook characters, crafts, and other family activities will be ongoing in the K12 Kids' Corner. For a complete schedule of panel discussions and list of the authors and illustrators who will be on hand during this FREE event at the Duke Energy Convention Center, downtown from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., visit the Books by the Banks website.

Trunk 'R Treat & Classic Car Show - October 15                         

This 3rd annual family event, sponsored by the Anderson Township Park District, will be held on October 15th from 2:30-6 pm.  It combines a classic car show, kids in costumes, candy, and music. Families and car enthusiasts stroll around the oval at Beech Acres Park while kids "trunk 'r treat" at each car.

Car owners have an opportunity to win various awards including Best of Show, Best of Show Runner-up, and Best Theme/Display. Entry fee for car owners is $15 per car.  Candy will be provided and all car entries receive one event T-shirt.

Trunk 'R Treating cost for ages 12 & under is $2 per child.  It runs from 4:30-6 pm. Beech Acres Park is located at 6910 Salem Road.

Wine, Art, Beer and Cigar Festival - Saturday, October 15                     

Spend Saturday evening, October 15, 7:00-10:30 pm, at the Wine, Art, Beer, and Cigar Festival sponsored by the Sharonville Chamber of Commerce in the Holiday Inn, I-275, on Hauck Rd.  You'll be enjoying a fun and unique evening featuring 27 wines, 47 beers, and a variety of art. Cigars will be available for purchase with smoking outside under a tent.

Consider reserving a spot for the VIP Hour from 6-7 pm featuring Burnet Ridge’s Purple Trillium and their representative Chip Emmerich.  Additionally, the brewmaster from Christian Moerlein will be available to discuss beer with guests. A tapas style buffet will be served.  Allen Mobley of Kentucky Gentlemen Cigar, will demonstrate rolling custom cigars.

Allow plenty of time to stroll around the various artist booths featuring one of a kind pottery, wood burnings, photography, silver jewelry, custom pen and ink drawings, and more.

Special discounted packages are available to spend the night at the Holiday Inn which includes a free breakfast in the morning. Admission: 7 to 10:30 pm - $25 per person includes 10 tickets (Each ticket allows single servings of either 2 oz. of wine or 4 oz. of beer). On top of that, the VIP Hour Admission: 6 to 7 pm - $50 per person which includes enhanced beer & wine selection, unlimited tasting, and full appetizer selection.  Designated Driver or non-drinker admission: $10 admission fee for access to everything throughout the evening.

A portion of the proceeds to benefit the Playhouse in the Park and Sharonville Fine Arts Center. Mark your calendar for the Playhouse's Off the Hill performances at this location.  They include What's Buggin' Greg on October 29, 3pm; War on January 27, 7pm; and River Rat and Cat on April 28, 2pm.  All shows will be at the Fine Arts Center.

Playhouse's Off the Hill Coming to a Community Arts Center near You!                         

The Playhouse's Off the Hill series launches this fall with Darrah Cloud's What's Buggin' Greg, winner of this year's Macy's New Play Prize for Young Audiences.  Fifth-grader Greg wakes one morning to discover he's turned into a giant cockroach. Will it exterminate his friendships? Squash his role in the  school play? The growing pains are far from typical in this hilarious, world premiere comedy. Recommended for ages 7 and up.

Today they attempt to beat the world record for the number of people to read the book mentioned above.  You can do it on their site, if you don't have the book at home.  Go for it and add to the record!  Thanks for taking a moment to read to a child today!

Great Theater - Playhouse in the Park and Ensemble Theater

You're always hearing about the fights on the playground.  Here, you'll see what happens when two sets of parents meet to try to work out the problems...sounds like the problem just got bigger!   There have been great reviews for this show. It won the 2009 Tony for Best Play.  A great start to Ed Stern's last year as Artistic Director.

Next to Nowhere on the Ensemble Theater stage through September 25

I loved this show and I wasn't the only one...it's just hard to see such raw feelings on stage, especially in a musical.  The Goodman family - such a prophetic name - experiences the ups and downs that most families with a bi-polar mother will endure.  As theater, it is spectacular!  This show won the 2009 Tony for Best Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize.  Lynn Meyers pulled off a real coup when she made arrangements for its regional premier here in Cincinnati.

Great Outdoor Weekend - September 24-25      

The Cincinnati Great Outdoor Weekend, an initiative of Green Umbrella presents a diverse sampling of nature activities in Greater Cincinnati the weekend of September 24-35.  There will be environmental education and outdoor recreation activities at over 51 sites around the area. It's all part of a push to get all of us, especially kids, enjoying the outdoors.  

Activities that sounded fun to me:

•Oiley Oiley Ocen FREE!  Backyard Games at Burnet Woods Valley shelter.  Sunday 1-3pm

•Great ARTdoors - Seeing Nature through the Arts at Gorman Heritage Farm and Evendale Cultural Arts Center, Saturday and Sunday, 10-4pm

•Be a Nature Detective at Woodland Mound - Saturday and Sunday 12-4pm

•Nature Scavenger Hunt and Critter Hike - Children's Meeting House Montessori School, Saturday 9-3pm

•Historic / Scientific Hike and Fossil Identification at Big Bone Lick State Park -Saturday and Sunday 12-4pm

Bluegrass for Babies   - Saturday, September 17                                 

This event, benefitting Cincinnati Children's Hospital grew out of a love for bluegrass and a determination to improve children's health.  Last year, over 1000 people attended sometime during the day and this year, even more are expected.  Headline sponsors include Krogers, Green Bean Delivery, Merrill Lynch, Suave and others.  As you can see, in only 3 years it has become quite an event.

Founders, Matt and Anne Schneider took their personal Bluegrass party and grew it for the entire community.  They believe firmly that young families need help in their journey to raise healthy kids.  The event will highlight both western and holistic health practices.

Activities for children include food and nutrition advice, and representatives from Kindermusic, Go2Grow Gymnastics, Soccer instruction and arts and crafts. 

So come to Seasongood Pavilion in Eden Park on Saturday, September 17th from 4pm until dark. Bands that will be playing include Relic, Jennifer Ellis, and the Comet Bluegrass All-Stars.  Cost is $10 in advance and $12 at the door.  Food, beer and wine will be available.
