One Earth...One Chance is Theme of 42nd Cincinnati Earth Day

A free, fun-filled day is planned for the 42rd celebration of Earth Day in Cincinnati on April 21st from noon until 5 pm. The day, to be held at Sawyer Point, will include children's activities, environmental education, entertainment and recycling education.

The day will kick off with an opening ceremony by the Miami Valley Council of Native Americans. Exhibitors on hand will represent environmental groups, government agencies and businesses. Fun activities will include a rock-climbing wall, Kayak Paddle Safety Pool, Orsanco's aquarium, baby animals from Sunrock Farm, Mother Earth and storytelling. Local classrooms are being asked to design costumes utilizing recylables. Children will be able to design their own earth Day flags.

Local bands will make the day totally enjoyable. Coming to perform are Jody Stapleton and the Generals, Magnolia Mountain, Wild Carrot and Janice Butterfly Tyrten Flute. Cool Critters will be there to educate about reptiles and invertebrates in need of rescuing. Bring used batteries to turn in for recycling.

Playhouse in the Park in the community

River Rat and Cat Tours Community Arts Centers

The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park's Off the Hill series concludes this spring with the hilarious River Rat & Cat. The show will tour to community arts centers throughout the region from until May 18.

River Rat and Cat learn that they don’t need to be the same or even like the same things in order to be good friends. Their daily tiffs take back-seat importance in the face of the imminent destruction of their habitat by the over-eager Dale Beaver. This hilarious comedy about friendship and cooperation is by Y York, the same playwright who brought us The Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavi.

River Rat & Cat is recommended for ages 5 and up. Performances are scheduled at the following sites this month:

Cincinnati Chef Named Best in the Great Lakes

Food and Wine Magazine seeks the most brilliant, up-and-coming new chefs on a regional and national basis, yearly. Cincinnati had two chefs nominated in the 10 chef field for the Great Lakes region. Chicago has 7 of the 10 nominated.

Jose Salazar of the Palace was nominated for "reinterpreting humble ingredients in brilliant ways" They specifically mentioned his roasted chicken breast with poached cranberries and broccoli rabe. He recommends that aspiring chefs keep things simple by using the best ingredients and not over manipulating them.

Daniel Wright of the Senate and Abigail Street won the contest for the Great Lakes region. At the Senate, he is best known for the hot dogs served in a multitude of ways. In fact, they serve over 500 hot dogs a week. Basically he wants to be know for upscale comfort food whether it is hot dogs at the Senate or Mediterranean small plates at Abigail Street.

Congratulations Daniel...we've been to Abigail Street and enjoyed both the atmosphere and the food! Now, if we

could ever get in at the Senate!

Newport Aquarium Honored

Newport Aquarium was named the Best Aquarium by the website, www.10best.com. This national travel and attraction website had asked readers to vote for aquariums across the country. In their first "Readers Choice Travel Awards", the Newport Aquarium was rated number one in the Best Aquarium category.

The Newport Aquarium has over 70 exhibits. One of the favorite new ones is the Penguin Palooza Exhibit sponsored by Krogers. Every morning there is a Penguin Parade outside the Aquarium. You can also take a behind the scenes tour of the exhibit to see the miles of piping that it takes to maintain the one million gallon enclosure. Kids can also experience Penguin Encounters, 20 minute visits up close and personal with penguins. Pictures are allowed.

Multiple environments for aquatic life will be seen during your visit. Meet up with the Amazon, a bog, a bayou, a coral reef, the Ohio riverbank, and shore animals. And don't forget the SHARKS!

Spring Break and Summer Day Camp deadlines are fast approaching!

Do you love your dog? Canine Camp will be perfect for you. Camps will be held for four consecutive weeks, on Saturdays, in April at French Park and in August in Ault Park. You and your best friend will have guided hikes, with weekly giveaways, prizes and pet bonding activities. Examining Pompeii Spring Break Camp – March 26 – 30

From the culture of Pompeii to the science behind volcanoes, the exciting Pompeii Exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center will be the cornerstone of this camp. Cincinnati YMCA's all offer day camps, each "Y" setting up its own individual schedule. You can go for one week or the whole summer. Each week has a different theme. Tuition is based upon whether you are a "Y" member or a community member. Registration starts March 10th.

Cincinnati Recreation Commission has programs for the entire summer at neighborhood recreation centers. Children ages 6-12 can find summer sunshine and smiles at a CRC summer day camp. Lego Kidsfest - March 23-25

This giant traveling expo is being held at Duke Energy Convention Center. All Ages will enjoy this Lego extravaganza that features millions of Lego pieces and lots of construction zones. Participants will build dozens of life-sized models and displays. The entire Kidsfest is filled with interactive and educational activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

In the model Gallery, there will be 40 life-sized models made entirely from Lego bricks. The master builders crew will demonstrate items that they get paid to play. If you build your own custom car, there will be race ramps to compete with friends and family. Throughout the construction zones and game areas, the event offers educational fun for all ages.

St. Patrick's Day Parade - March 17th

Celebrating its 46th year in Cincinnati, the Cincinnati St. Patrick's Day Parade will once again go through the downtown area. Grand Marshall of this year's parade is 95-year old, Tom Griffin, a member of the 1942 Doolittle Raid on Japan.

Starting at Noon on March 17th, the parade route begins on Second street, goes up Main Street and then down Fifth Street to Elm Street and then turns once again to go back to Second Street.

The St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee is composed of residents of both Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Major supporters include, Guinness, Warsteiner, CBTS, King Ludwig Weissbeer, Harp, and Smithwicks.

Cincinnati Restaurants and Hotels honored

AAA travel guides have awarded 10 area restaurants and hotels their coveted Four Diamond Award for 2012. It is the highest rating given by the guides. AAA conducts physical, on-site evaluations of all the restaurants and properties that they rate.

Restaurants include Boca in Oakley (soon to move downtown), Daveeds at 934 in Mt. Adams, Celestial in Mt. Adams, Nicola's in Over the Rhine, Orchids at the Palm Court and the Palace Restaurant in the Cincinnatian Hotel, both in downtown. The Palace has received the honor for 24 consecutive years.

Hotels awarded the honor are the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, The Cincinnatian Hotel, and The Westin, all of which are downtown, plus the Marriott River Center in Covington.

Mark your calendars now for Homearama 2012. It will be held from June 9-24 on a beautiful site just one minute off the Wards Corner exit on I-275. Willows Bend is in Miami Township off Loveland-Miamiville Road. There are six builders under construction at this time. The most common question we are asked is “How’s the Cincinnati housing market?” We are constantly keeping our ears to the ground and want to provide you with both the macro and micro view of the economic issues of housing. If you are looking to buy or sell, remember that all housing is local, so it is most important to understand the sales picture in your immediate neighborhood.

It seems as though the housing statistics are pointing to the end of the housing downturn and that the market is about to turn the corner. Why do we say that? Major economic statistics are exhibiting a level of stability and positive trends are showing up:

• Households are gradually paying off debt.

• Credit is more accessible.

• Consumer confidence has rebounded significantly since June 2011.

• Employment trends appear to be improving.

• Builders are seeing increased demand to build new homes

• Affordability is rising because of rock-bottom interest rates and housing price declines.

Indications show that the broad economy and the housing market are both moving towards positive growth. Some issues still affect the outlook…slow global economic growth, possible recession in Europe, and fiscal and political uncertainty here at home. Statistics are positive for buying here in Cincinnati. The latest analysis was produced by the National Association of Homebuilders. Assuming a 10 percent downpayment and mortgages at "today's mortgage rates", 75.9% of all homes sold nationwide were affordable to home buyers last quarter. Even better, Cincinnati homes were affordable by 88.4% of Cincinnatians.earning the area's median income.

America's Best Beer Gardens

Mechlenberg Gardens has been honored by Travel and Leisure Magazine as one of the best Beer Gardens in America. They insist that the country is in the midst of a beer revival, with the flourishing of beer gardens and more domestic breweries than at any time since Prohibition.

Having also visited one of the other honorees, Stone Brewing Co. in San Diego, I would have to agree that Mechlenberg's can't be beat. There's something about the history of the place that will get my vote every time.

Mechlenberg Gardens was founded in 1865...just think 147 years ago...and is the oldest continually running restaurant and beer garden in Cincinnati. I was surprised to learn that in the early days it was the site of groups of German immigrants being taught about the American political process.

Obviously, Cincinnati is a city with such a strong German tradition that it is easy to see why the assembling continues. If you decide to visit the afternoon or evening of a University of Cincinnati football or basketball game, the place will be going strong. Filled with Bearcat supporters, the restaurant offers bus rides to the game, so you can avoid the hassle and expense of parking.

But, my favorite time to visit is on a lovely Spring day when you can sit outside under the 100-year-old grapevines and enjoy a lite lunch with one (or more) of the crafted beers. They have 15 German and American craft beers on tap and 80 by the bottle. Quite a choice!

Mason and Springboro Named to "100 Best Places to Live"

CNN Money Ranks Mason and Springboro among "100 Best Places to Live"

Warren County cities, Mason at #24 and Springboro at #42, were ranked among the top 100 Best Places to Live by CNN Money.

Mason is popular because of the Mason schools that placed fifth out of 613 Ohio school districts in 2010. It is also cited for access to Cincinnati, proximity to interstates, plus the Beach and Kings Island. The median income is $101,034 and median home price is $173,000.

Springboro is known for its Main Street where 33 structures are on the Historic Register, many former stops on the Underground Railroad. It's small town character is notable. The median family income is $105,681 and median home price is $191,145.

Cincinnati Ranked "The Place to Be" in 2012

Lonely Planet, the travel experts, ranked Cincinnati #3 in their list of places for travel in 2012. We're in great company!

They rated the US Virgin Islands #1 and the Hudson River Valley, New York # 2. Following us in the ranking are the Four Corners Region in southwest USA; Culebra, Puerto Rico; California gold Country; Boulder, Colorado; Hawaii's, Big Island; Chicago; and Yellowstone National Park.

Cincinnati was recognized for more than just its river city attributes. They praised it as a worthy venue for a weekend away. Particularly recognized were Mt. Adams, the Cincinnati Art Museum, Over the Rhine's Italianate architecture and Findlay Market. They claimed the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center was one of the primary reasons for our ranking. It's certainly exciting when you add the 2012 World Choir Games to this list!
