Tom Sawyer Weekend Activities

The National Endowment of the Arts has established the "Big Read" and the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library and the Cincinnati Park Board in conjunction with Joseph Beth Booksellers have agreed to sponsor it locally. Their goal is to "revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of citizens."  The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the selected book.

Cincinnati celebrates the book in various ways:

  • Saturday, Oct. 17, 11 am - 2 pm. - Burnet Woods Lake - Floating fun.  Canoes, paddles, life vests and basic instruction provided.
  • Wildlife on the river - Learn about critters that interested Tom and his friends from Trailside Nature Center staff
    • Oct. 14, 3:30 pm - West End Branch Library
    • Oct. 15, 4 pm - Pleasant Ridge Branch
    • Oct. 20, 3 pm - Avondale Branch
  • Folk Remedies and Superstitions presented by the Caldwell Nature Center staff
    • Oct.14, 3:30 pm - Elmwood Place Branch
    • Oct. 28, 4 pm - Norwood Branch
  • Old Fashioned Games that might have been played by Tom Sawyer is presented by LaBoiteaux Woods naturalists
    • Oct. 15, 2:30 pm - College Hill Branch
    • Oct. 21, 3 pm - Northside Branch
  • A Tom Sawyer Classroom complete with strict teachers from the California Woods Nature Center
    • Oct. 14, 3:30 pm - Madisonville Branch
    • Oct. 20, 3:30 pm - Oakley Branch
  • River Music with Bearfoot features Russ and Barb Childers and their fiddle and banjo music, plus storytelling about river life
    • Oct. 12, 7 pm - Reading Branch
    • Oct. 23, 4 pm - Corryville Branch
    • Oct. 24, 3 pm - Madeira Branch
